Background Information on the Pencil Skirt:
The predecessor of the pencil skirt first appeared in 1880 in the form of the hump skirt, though its popularity was short-lived. In 1910, French fashion designer Paul Poiret transformed it into a tight tube skirt and made it socially acceptable. It wasn’t until 1947 that Christian Dior transformed this skirt into the classic pencil skirt by designing a shorter version of the hump skirt. The new silhouette he created—the H-line—was groundbreaking at the time. The main focus of this silhouette was the pencil skirt, which became particularly trendy in the office at that time. The typical pencil skirt is form-fitting at the hips and tapers down to the calf—like a “pencil.” This design perfectly accentuates rounded hips and a narrow waist.
